What to Know About the Powertrains of the new 2024 Mazda CX-90?
April 13 2023,
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is an entirely new vehicle that arrives with three powertrain options that have never been seen under the hood of a Mazda vehicle before. Here is what you should know about these new drivetrains.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the first Mazda vehicle to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in Canada. This new drivetrain is composed of a modified version of the naturally aspirated 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine used in many Mazda models, an electric motor, and a 17.8 kWh battery. This makes for a combined output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, enough to give the CX-90 a level of performance that is rarely seen in competing models. The size of the battery also allows the CX-90 to drive on electric power only in many situations, thus making it possible for most drivers to complete their daily commute without using a drop of fuel.
The high-output 3.3L engine
Also introduced in the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is an entirely new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. This powertrain provides an added level of refinement and performance to the CX-90 that allows it to compete directly with more expensive models from established premium automakers. Offered in the GT-P and Signature versions, this engine can deliver up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel. Due to the addition of a small electric motor between the engine and the transmission, this engine is actually a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain, which is how it is capable of consuming only 9.5 L/100km in combined city and highway driving.
The standard 3.3L engine
Entry-level versions of the new 2024 Mazda CX-90 are not forgotten since they also benefit from an all-new engine. Indeed, these models are powered by the regular-output version of the turbocharged 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine described above. This engine delivers a slightly lower output, at 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, but it keeps all of the smoothness and refinement of the more powerful version. This lower output also allows this mild-hybrid engine to be more fuel efficient, with a combined consumption rating of 9.3 L/100km.
