Five things to know about Mazda’s electrification strategy for 2023

Mazda's ambitious electrification plan will pick up steam in 2023. Several new electrified vehicles are on the way, including two new plug-in hybrid SUVs, a new hybrid version of the Mazda CX-50, and new mild hybrid powertrains. All of this is being done with the year 2030 in mind as the deadline for completely transitioning to an electric or hybrid vehicle lineup. Let's look at some of the most interesting aspects of Mazda's updated electric plan announced in November.

New Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 plug-in hybrids coming next year

In 2023, Mazda will release the CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV, two new plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicles. Both SUVs will be available with PHEV drivetrains that provide an estimated 50 kilometres of range. Although Mazda hasn't confirmed the details of its PHEV powertrain, its plug-in hybrid engines deliver over 50 km of range in Europe.

The new Mazda CX-50 Hybrid 

To complement the new Mazda CX-50 lineup that was introduced this year with a turbocharged 2.5-litre SKYACTIV powertrain,, the automaker will also debut a hybrid engine option. This new model will provide the same performance as the current CX-50, but with even better efficiency.

The introduction of new mild hybrid drivetrains

In 2023, Mazda will also release its first mild hybrid powertrains. The 48 V battery in mild hybrid powertrains helps with things like starting the engine and providing extra boost when needed. These various tasks are made easier on the engine thanks to this tiny battery, which in turn helps improve fuel economy.

A new electric vehicle platform

Mazda will unveil a new fully electric SUV by 2025 and in the process release a new SKYACTIV EV platform which will serve as a starting point for more electric vehicles to come. The new Mazda electric SUV will join the current Mazda MX-30 EV.

The Mazda MX-30 EV SUV will go on sale across Canada

Furthermore, Mazda has announced that the all-new MX-30 EV will be available across Canada this coming year. The Mazda EV had been previously reserved for customers in Quebec and British Columbia only.
