2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Honda CR-V: When Refinement and Performance Count

The CX-5 is a vehicle designed for owners who want something better than the ordinary SUV. One look at the exterior, and it leaves a lasting impression that other SUVs don't. The CX-5's superior dynamics bring the fun back to SUV driving. Each model is geared with advanced technology, exceptional amenities and the signature Mazda style.

To help illustrate how the CX-5 compares to the competition, let’s compare it to the 2021 Honda CR-V.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 moves ahead in performance

The CX-5 features two powertrains that offer a range of performance. The GS, GX, Kuro, and the GT include a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. If you require some of the best power available in its class, the GT (optional), Signature, and 100th Anniversary Edition feature a turbo 2.5-litre that produces up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This amazing power and response make the CX-5 a serious performer in its class.

The Honda CR-V offers a turbo 1.5-litre four-cylinder powertrain that develops 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque—both comparable numbers to the CX-5's non-turbo engine. However, the CX-5's six-speed automatic transmission includes features such as manual shift mode and a drive selection switch, adding personalization to the driving experience. CX-5 turbo owners also receive paddle shifters. The CR-V's continuously variable transmission just isn’t up to par for those who enjoy driving.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 takes handling to new levels

The CX-5 continues to distance itself from the CR-V with its handling and agility technology. It achieves two goals: helping you feel more relaxed and adding vehicle stability when turning. The system shifts vehicle weight by responding to steering input and adjusting wheel torque to counteract the forces the CX-5 creates as it turns. This results in more balanced turns and less fatigue on the driver. The Honda CR-V does not include this type of technology.

Although both vehicles have available AWD, the CX-5 adds even more performance as the i-Activ AWD system works with G-Vectoring to make driving even more exhilarating. You can also count on the ability of i-Activ AWD to help you through challenging road conditions.
