2021 Mazda CX-30 vs. 2021 Toyota CH-R : Performance is Key

The new Mazda CX-30 is a subcompact crossover that is big on performance and styling. It offers AWD on each trim and makes it standard on the top model, the GT. Most compact and subcompact crossovers are focused on FWD, and full availability of AWD is rare among segment competitors.

We are excited about all the CX-30's features. Here, compare it to an established compact SUV model, the Toyota C-HR.

The Mazda CX-30 tops power and efficiency

The model lineup features three capable engines that surpass what the C-HR offers. The CX-30 GX outputs 150 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. It has standard FWD and available AWD. The CX-30 GS and GT models upgrade to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. And then, there’s the new Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine that delivers an impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque in the Turbo variant.

The Toyota C-HR offers just one engine option--a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that peaks at 144 horsepower and reduces torque to 139 lb-ft. This model lineup does not offer AWD like the CX-30.

Even with the boosted power, the CX-30 beats and competes with the C-HR's fuel consumption. The CX-30 FWD 2.0-litre engine earns a very respectable consumption rating of 7.1 L/100 km. This actually is better than the C-HR's highway rating of 7.5 L/100 km.

The CX-30's AWD also provides better performance around winding roads and safer driving on different surfaces. It uses the i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive system to distribute torque to wheels with grip, providing much better handling on snowy and icy surfaces in the winter, too. The FWD C-HR only distributes power with its two front wheels.

Personalize you driving experience with the Mazda CX-30

Most compact crossovers don't offer equipment that adds character to driving. However, the CX-30 lets you have some fun with a six-speed automatic transmission that includes a Drive Selection switch, manual shift mode, and available paddle shifters. These features provide a little more spirit to your driving in traffic or on the open road.

The C-HR offers a standard continuously variable transmission that doesn't receive much input from the driver. You are at the mercy of its performance when you need a little more out of the drivetrain.
